ADHD/ADD & Pediatric Mental Health

Our children face many challenges as they develop and begin learning to navigate our complex world. In addition to being busy with the big job of growing up healthy, they’re learning their place in the world. Children of any age can encounter mental health challenges. These challenges can impact their ability to integrate into society well, succeed at work, and excel in future careers. Further, these concerns have been demonstrated as having a complex relationship with physical health. Paragon Pediatrics can provide access to care to help your child manage and overcome these struggles.

Mental Health Care in Child Development

ADHD is a common mental health concern that is becoming better understood and easier to identify. ADHD typically presents with its first signs before the age of 12. Some children may demonstrate indicators as early as their fourth year. When the symptoms of ADHD go untreated, they can be the cause of significant hardships. This condition can make it difficult to form social relationships and interfere with education and career aspirations later in life.

ADHD comes in three different subtypes. These subtypes and common symptoms include:

  • Predominantly Inattentive – These children often make careless mistakes and struggle with paying attention to detail. They may not appear to be listening, even when directly addressed. Organization of activities and tasks can prove challenging. These are a few of the symptoms common with this form.
  • Hyperactive/Impulsive – This form often manifests as excessive talking despite social cues. Impatience. Often interrupting with an answer before the question is finished being stated. Climbing and running at inappropriate times, fidgeting, and difficulty staying seated.
  • Blended – May exhibit traits common to both of the above forms.

No individual symptom is an indicator of ADHD. Only when multiple symptoms are present, and their severity such that they create significant concerns, is a diagnosis likely to be reached. This caution is due to particular developmental concerns, such as speech delay, often mistaken for ADHD.

Paragon Pediatrics also provides support and treatment for various mental health concerns often faced by children and adolescents. These conditions include depression, anxiety, and childhood behavioral problems. These concerns, if left untreated, can have a lasting impact on your child’s life experience.

Depression can seem overwhelming, regardless of age. It often manifests as sadness, a loss of interest in previously favorite activities, and isolation. Everyone gets sad sometimes, but when these symptoms persist, it may be a reason for concern. Anxiety and depression often occur together. Anxiety can take many forms and make common everyday tasks and situations overwhelming beyond tolerance.

Autism is a condition that is becoming better understood as years go by. Those who fall on the autistic spectrum vary significantly in the visibility and impact of their condition. Paragon Pediatrics provides support for patients at all points of the autistic spectrum.
